Causes, Signs And Remedies For Lice
There are three presentations of lice infections that exist. The head variety are the most common type and it affects anyone irrespective of socio-economic group. Then there is the body variety and this is generally associated with poverty, poor hygiene and overcrowding. The pubic variety, also known as crabs, is transmitted by sexual or intimate contact.
Parasites on the head are grey in color and are approximately three millimeters in length. The female of the species’ life cycle is approximately one month. During this time she will produce eight to eleven eggs (nits) every day and these will attach themselves securely on the hair strand close to the scalp. They are attached to the strand by a liquid material that is unable to be dissolved and due to this is quite problematic to remove. Within approximately eight days the eggs will hatch and by the tenth day they will be adults. If there is no human to feed on it will die because of dehydration. Due to this fact the parasite is normally not capable of being transferred from anything other than human to human.
It is passed on by direct contact from one person’s head to another. Sharing items of a personal nature like brushes, combs and hats will spread the infestation. Young girl children are plagued by this condition, more so than young boys. The most common symptom is itching. The itching is generally in the scalp area and it may spread to the neck and behind the person’s ears. To diagnose the infestation, the hair will have to be looked at and nits will have to be identified. Use a fine comb to run through the hair to check.
Body invasion parasites are normally bigger than the head type however their appearance is similar. It will manifest itself in the seams of clothing and will transfer from there to the person’s body so that it can feed. Both types have the same hatching period however the survival time of the body parasite is up to one month if it is not on the body.
Severe itching on the parts of the body where the seams of clothing touch will be a symptom to look for. The red marks left from scratching will be visible. Diagnosis of this particular type can be made by inspecting clothing, linens and mattresses, particularly where the seams are.
The female pubic louse’s lifespan is shorter than the head and the body louse. She also produces fewer eggs than the others. The nits will normally attach themselves to the bottom of the pubic hair shaft and will remain there for about 6 to 8 days before hatching. This parasite is transmitted via direct sexual closeness in adults. Children will only be affected by non-sexual transmission from their parents or in cases of sexual abuse. Transmission of the infestation via clothing or bed linen is unlikely.
Relentless itching is a symptom and this could become worse during the night. A bluish spot could develop where a bite has taken place. The use of condoms will not prevent transfer of the parasite. Adults who are infected should also look that there may be other diseases that have been spread sexually.
There are various home treatments and medications available for the treatment of all lice infestations. Medical advice should be sought if there is infection of any sort.
